Chapter 3, Scenario 3

Review the clinical scenario presented and respond to questions.

Adam and Chuck are 8 and 10 years, old respectively. They have had lice for 4 weeks now and have been sent home from school frequently over the past month. Their grades are beginning to decline, and they are falling behind in schoolwork. During the past 10 days, as soon as they arrive at the school campus, their teachers meet them and inspect their hair before they are allowed to enter the school building. Their classmates are beginning to tease them but also stay away from them, taunting that they are contagious and shouting, "Keep your distance!" When it is time for recess, none of the other children includes either Adam or Chuck in the games or activities. As the school nurse, analyze the situation using Erikson's developmental theory, and propose strategies to assist Adam and Chuck toward healthy personality development as well as physical health.
