Chapter 3, Scenario 2

Review the clinical scenario presented and respond to questions.

Marcy is a 48-year-old woman who has come to her health-care provider today with severe abdominal pain. She states her fear of an ulcer because her father and maternal grandfather both had "bleeding ulcers." After further discussion, Marcy admits to having become "the poster child for stress" since John, her father-in-law, who has moderate dementia, moved in after a fire in his mobile home. It seems that John's wife died 8 months ago and John was trying to prepare soup for dinner but fell asleep watching television. Marcy has a son-in-law who lives at the university across country. She and her husband Tim teach at different colleges, but Tim commutes an hour each way to the engineering program. Marcy teaches sociology at the local campus but has several online course that she is still having difficulty with because John tends to wander the neighborhood if left unattended. Describe the situation for this family in terms of one or more developmental theories.
